Lyonia Environmental Center open, schedules first environmental programs Oct. 22 - 31

The Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC), which occupies 4,000 square feet of the Deltona Regional Library complex, is open to the public following a successful grand opening Oct. 17, which was attended by nearly 4,000 people.

Staff members will offer the following environmental programs this month:

  • Spooky scrub silhouettes - 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22. Discover whose eyes come alive in the darkness of the scrub night. This program is appropriate for ages 8 and up.
  • LEC goes batty! - 1 - 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Learn about bats and the special roles they play. This program is appropriate for ages 8 and up.
  • Scrub silhouettes for seedlings - 2 - 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25. Discover whose eyes come alive in the darkness of the scrub night. This program is appropriate for ages 7 and under.
  • Creepy crawlies in the scrub - 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. Participate in this high energy, hands-on presentation by Jim Greene of Alligator Safaris. Learn about all things reptilian! This program is appropriate for all ages.
  • Snakes, skinks and spiders…oh my! - 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. Slither into the LEC and learn what creepy, crawly critters live in the scrub. This program is appropriate for all ages.

All programs will be at the Lyonia Environmental Center, 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona. Advance registration is requested by calling (386) 789-7207. Children must be accompanied by a participating adult.

The Lyonia Environmental Center encourages exploration of Volusia County’s ecosystems and fosters community involvement in conservation efforts. Staff provides hands-on field and classroom and environmental experiences. The center includes the Dr. Alice E. Cross Environmental Classrooms, an exhibit gallery, a visiting scientist’s workroom, and a coffee and gift shop. The 1,000-seat outdoor Deltona Amphitheater, adjacent to the library, offers a place for community gatherings and educational instruction.
